Understanding the support

What is Meal Preparation?

"Good food, prepared with care. Every single time."

Make a Referral

Meal Preparation through the NDIS covers support with planning, preparing and sometimes cooking meals for participants who need assistance maintaining adequate nutrition as part of their disability support.

This can range from full meal preparation where the support worker prepares meals on behalf of the participant, to collaborative cooking where the participant is actively involved and building skills at the same time.

At Shyna Promise, we follow each participant's dietary requirements, mealtime management plans and individual preferences β€” because eating well should be something you enjoy, not just something that happens to you.

Everything included

What Does Meal Preparation Include?

From planning to plating β€” we've got every part of mealtimes covered.

πŸ“‹

Meal Planning

Weekly meal planning that considers nutrition, preferences, budget and dietary requirements.

We help participants plan their meals for the week in a way that is nutritious, enjoyable and practical. This includes considering dietary requirements, cultural food preferences, budget, what is already in the pantry, and what meals the participant genuinely enjoys. Good meal planning reduces food waste, saves money and makes cooking less stressful.

Meal Preparation & Cooking

Preparing and cooking nutritious meals following recipes, instructions and individual preferences.

We can prepare and cook meals for participants who need hands-on assistance with this task. This may include preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner, following specific recipes or mealtime management plans, using kitchen equipment safely, managing portion sizes and presenting meals in a way that is appetising and appropriate for the participant's needs.
🫢

Texture-Modified Meals

Preparing modified meals following speech pathologist recommendations for safe swallowing.

We prepare texture-modified meals for participants who require them as recommended by a speech pathologist. This includes minced and moist, soft and bite-sized, smooth pureed and liquidised textures, prepared safely and in line with the participant's mealtime management plan. We take care to present them well and season them appropriately.
πŸ₯—

Dietary & Allergy Management

Carefully following dietary plans, allergies, intolerances and cultural food requirements.

We take dietary requirements and food allergies extremely seriously. Our support workers carefully follow each participant's dietary management plan, which may include allergies, intolerances, medical dietary requirements, cultural or religious food practices, or personal preferences. We never take shortcuts when it comes to food safety and dietary compliance.

Grocery Shopping Support

Shopping for ingredients, managing food budgets and choosing the right products for dietary needs.

Meal preparation often starts at the shops. We support participants with grocery shopping to ensure they have the right ingredients for their planned meals. This may include creating a shopping list, comparing prices, checking labels for allergens, choosing fresh produce, managing a food budget and ensuring pantry staples are well stocked.
🧽

Kitchen Clean-Up

Cleaning up after meals so the kitchen stays safe, hygienic and ready for next time.

Meal preparation isn't finished until the kitchen is clean. We assist with washing up, wiping down benches and appliances, putting away ingredients and equipment, emptying the bin, and keeping the kitchen clean and hygienic between meals. A clean kitchen is important for food safety and the participant's comfort in their home.

Our approach

"A good meal is about more than
food. It's about dignity."

We prepare every meal with care β€” because what goes on that plate matters, and so does the person eating it.

NDIS funding

Understanding the
Codes on Your Invoice

Meal Preparation is funded from your Core Supports budget under Assistance with Daily Life. It is typically claimed as part of a daily living shift where the support worker assists with multiple tasks, but can also be a standalone support.

If a participant has specific mealtime support needs due to swallowing difficulties, additional high intensity funding may apply.

"Mum has complex dietary needs and it used to be so stressful. Her worker follows her plan perfectly, always asks what she feels like and makes it feel like a proper meal β€” not hospital food."
